State of Eko
Explore Eko State – The Commercial Nerve Center of the Democratic Republic of the Yoruba
Eko, often referred to as the “center of excellence,” was formerly known as “Lagos,” a name given by Portuguese invaders during the early days of European contact with Yorubaland. Today, Eko is not only the entertainment capital but also the commercial and social hub of the Democratic Republic of the Yoruba.
Eko is a coastal state, bordered to the south by the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean), to the north and east by State of Ogun, and to the west by the Republic of Benin.
Eko is often described as a “land of waters,” earning the Yoruba praise “arómisá lẹ̀gbẹlẹ̀gbẹ,” which reflects its vast network of waterways. Over the years, Eko has been a place where people can escape from a confined existence and enjoy the open expanse of the sea, where the water meets the sky and land. It is a place that offers access to the wider world, with abundant opportunities for commerce, industry, entertainment, and luxury. Eko has rightfully earned its place as the “Jewel of Yorubaland” and is often described as the Entertainment Capital of the West Coast of Africa.
